Bert joined Squadron
249 on 15th June 1944 and was immediately involved in combat action.
249 Squadron was based at Grottaglie in Italy
at this time.
This was just over a year since his first flight. All his war time action was in Spitfires V. The serial numbers are not shown in the Log Book bar on two occasions; LZ873 (see following pages) and JK(?)339(?).
In total Bert flew in 17 missions. In June 1944 he flew 7:05 hours Non Ops Flying and a further 17:75 hours Ops Flying. In July he flew an additional 8:45 hours Ops Flying.
Missions were flown to :-
- Foggia, and Brindisi, Italy.
- Elbasa, Albania.
- Corfu.
- Sarande, Korca, Berat, Lushinje, Albania.
