249 Bert joined Squadron 249 on 15th June 1944 and was immediately involved in combat action. 249 Squadron was based at Grottaglie in Italy at this time.
This was just over a year since his first flight. All his war time action was in Spitfires V. The serial numbers are not shown in the Log Book bar on two occasions; LZ873 (see following pages) and JK(?)339(?).
In total Bert flew in 17 missions. In June 1944 he flew 7:05 hours Non Ops Flying and a further 17:75 hours Ops Flying. In July he flew an additional 8:45 hours Ops Flying.
Missions were flown to :-


- Foggia, and Brindisi, Italy.
- Elbasa, Albania.
- Corfu.
- Sarande, Korca, Berat, Lushinje, Albania.
